UST Projector Screen Guide: Flatness, ALR, Gain & Floor-Rising Setup

Ultra-short-throw projectors are convenient because they sit close to the screen, but the geometry is unforgiving. Light travels upward at a steep angle, so a small ripple that a long-throw projector barely reveals can bend straight lines or create uneven focus with UST.

1. Surface flatness matters more with UST

Look for a tensioned surface and stable chassis. The NothingProjector matte-white product is described as tab-tensioned, while UST ALR floor-rising competitors also use tension systems. Whichever screen you choose, inspect geometry across the full image during setup.

2. Matte white and UST ALR solve different light problems

A matte-white screen can display UST projection if the geometry is suitable, but it does not reject ceiling light simply because the projector is UST. A lenticular UST ALR/CLR screen is structured to reflect steeply arriving projector light toward viewers while absorbing or redirecting unwanted light from other directions.

3. Projector placement must match the screen material

Some ALR/CLR screens are intended specifically for a projector below the image. Certain products have separate variants for ceiling-mounted UST projectors. Never flip an optical screen or assume the light path is reversible unless the manufacturer explicitly supports that orientation.

4. Cabinet width and centerline are critical

Center the projector and screen mechanically before relying on digital correction. Keystone can reduce effective resolution and does not fix a physically twisted or tilted screen.

5. Control the room before buying more brightness

In a dark room, matte white can be highly effective. In a bright room, the screen's ability to reject ambient light can matter more than a higher gain number. This is why the matte-white vs ALR decision should happen before you compare brand features.
