Projector screen gain is a ratio describing reflected brightness compared with a reference white surface. A 1.0-gain screen is the baseline. A 1.3-gain screen reflects more light toward its peak viewing direction; a 0.5-gain screen reflects less light in that direction.
That does not mean 1.3 is automatically better than 0.5. In the floor-rising market, the lower-gain screen may be an optical ALR/CLR material designed to reject room light and preserve contrast around a UST projector.
Why the NothingProjector model lists 1.3 gain
The featured screen uses matte-white PVC rather than a dark lenticular ALR surface. Its published 1.3 peak gain fits a design goal of returning more projected light to the audience in dim or controlled-light rooms.
Why some UST ALR screens list 0.5 or 0.6 gain
WEMAX lists 0.5 gain on its UST ALR floor-rising models, while Elite Screens lists 0.6 on the Kestrel CLR. Those surfaces use directional microstructures to treat projector light and room light differently. Raw gain is only one part of the picture; ambient-light rejection can improve perceived black level and contrast when the room is bright.
Gain, screen size and projector brightness
As screen size grows, the same projector output is spread over more area. Moving from 100″ to 120″ therefore asks more from the projector. A higher-gain surface can help with perceived brightness, but it should not be used to ignore projector output, room light or viewing-angle requirements.
What to check before using gain as a buying filter
- Is the room dark, dim or bright during actual viewing?
- Is the projector UST or a conventional throw type?
- How large is the planned image?
- Does the screen use matte, lenticular, Fresnel or another optical structure?
- How wide is the seating area?
